What is it?:

Horny Goat Weed (Yin yang huo) is best known for its ability to enhance male libido... in men it is used to address Kidney yang deficiency that presents with sexual disorders such as impotence, lack of sexual desire, incomplete erection, premature ejaculation, spermatorrhea, and low sperm count. It also treats various manifestations of cold and deficiency in the Kidney such as soreness of the lower back/weakness in the knees and infertility in women.

This herb can also be used to dispel wind-cold-damp in the channels as well-- this might present as pain, cold, and/or numbness in the limbs and extremities (fingertips and toes) or as bi zheng (painful obstruction syndrome), which shows up as muscle spasms and cramps.

It should also be noted that is a very warming herb without the qualities of nourishing jing (essence), yin, or blood to balance it out; therefore long-term use as a single herb is not recommended (especially if you already tend to run hot.

What is it good for:

  • male sexual issues related to performance: impotence, erectile dysfunction, lack of desire, etc...
  • other male sexual issues (low sperm count, nocturnal emissions/dribbling)
  • sore lower back/weakness in the knees
  • infertility in women
  • addresses pain, tingling, and/or numbness in the limbs & extremities

 Traditional Chinese medicine benefits:

  • tonifies Kidney Yang
  • dispels wind-damp-cold attacking the channels and collaterals

What else you might like to know:

Horny Goat Weed is very warming as a single herb and should not really be taken long term (especially if you are someone who as a rule runs hot").

It is important to understand that Chinese herbs work by restoring balance to the body. This means that you usually have to take an herb or a formula for a longer period of time than you would with pharmaceuticals in order to get results-- usually at least a month, and often times longer than that... it all depends on the individual and the nature of the ailment being addressed.
